Name Game

The announcement came this week that the International Pavilion at the New York State Fair will take on a new name–The Eatery.

OK–you’ve got to admit, that’s more accurate. INTL INTERIOR 17Aside from flags from various nations hung from the rafters, there’s not much that’s truly international about the building. Yeah, there are vendors selling Asian, Italian, Caribbean and German cuisine, but there’s also plenty of good old American chow and a tavern with New York beer and wine.

So, you could call it a re-definition of the place. But knowing the traditional nature of Fair regulars, it will be many years before the name takes hold. Some people still call the Art and Home Center the Women’s Building.

The addition of new food stands inside was also announced, so the name isn’t a big deal as long as the food is good.

Another One Bites the Dust

A recent tour of the New York State Fairgrounds revealed another vacancy where a food stand had been.

STANDS DOWN 19The newly empty spot is outside the poultry barn, between the Grange Ox Roast and Twin Trees. Remember Ox Roast moved last Fair after their corner stand was demolished, so that area is continuing to evolve.

A new vendor under temporary shelter will fill the spot this year, opening up those often-crowded walkways a little.

Pointing the Way to Opening Day

The 2019 New York State Fair opens 10 weeks from tomorrow. If you haven’t begun planning your trips to the Fair, the time is here.

Of course, you’ll want to buy advance sale tickets to get a substantial savings on admission prices. POINTING BOY 18Remember, though, that some days are free for certain groups of patrons, while other days feature drastically reduced ticket prices, available at the gates.

Full info on prices, promotions and ticket purchasing locations is available on the Fair website.

You can’t come close to seeing it all, hearing it all, doing it all or eating it all in one trip, so plan on multiple adventures at the Fair.

Let the countdown begin!

Barn Razing

The open-air sheep barn no longer stands next to the goat building at the new York State Fair. DEMOLISHED SHEEP 19The roof was torn off during a winter storm and the structure was subsequently demolished, leaving the pile of rubble pictured here.

Never fear, sheep fans, the curly cuties will make their appearance this year in a new location, a couple of hundred yards west, next to the 4-H horse ring. A temporary structure being erected for this year will be replaced by a more permanent barn for 2020.

There seem to be fewer infrastructure changes this year compared to the past few, but count on State Fair Hound to keep you updated.
