On The Trail, Day 5–Tropical Paradise

The 2022 New York State Fair features the festive Pan African Village now firmly established as a major attraction, having celebrated its 25th anniversary during the scaled-down 2021 edition.

BONGOThe colorful block party, situated between the Center of Progress and the Art and Home Center buildings, features bands and dancers on the entertainment tent stage, and stands serving a variety of delicious non-traditional food alongside vendors displaying clothing, jewelry, rare handicrafts and collectibles.

Although today it’s hard to imagine the Fair without it, the founding of the Pan African Village came in 1996 when first-year director Peter Cappuccilli, Jr. brought in community leaders to help make the Fair more culturally inclusive. That year, some grumbling about the lack of minority participation had grown louder. Cappuccilli showed true vision in partnering with many Pan African Village pioneers including Ken Jackson and Bongo Hanslip to create the village.

The resulting concept not only opened opportunities for minority-owned businesses, it added a dimension of excitement and personality that reflects New York’s diverse culture. PAN AF GIFTSThe Pan African Village has since become a mainstay for the Fair, a popular annual tradition beloved by visitors of all races and backgrounds.

This being our Fair, food is central to the area’s popularity as hungry customers try exotic offerings including Caribbean, soul food, barbecue and homemade desserts from local restaurants and vendors.

Visitors get into the spirit by taking a drumming lesson, viewing historic exhibits or dancing to the day’s featured musical act. PAN AF ARCHShoppers browse the vendor tents for unusual gifts and keepsakes.

25 Fairs ago, there wasn’t much happening on that block.   But today it’s become one of those not-to-be-missed State Fair favorites. The Pan African Village is near Chevy Court and the State Parks area, easily accessible from tram stop 2, just inside the recently-opened gate 11A.

Not far from the village is the State Parks area, home to several terrific exhibits surrounding the lovely reflecting pool. The feathered predators of Hawk Creek Wildlife Center are truly inspirational and have become a Fair favorite. Rescued and rehabilitated eagles, falcons, owls, vultures and, of course, hawks are on display in the tent and knowledgeable staff present them daily at 11 a.m., 2:15 and 4:30 p.m., balancing fascinating talks with high-flying performances. Don’t miss it.   HC SHOW

When Mom and Dad are ready for a break, but the kids are too excited to sit down, the perfect answer may be a visit to the State Parks putting green near the Eatery (International Pavilion).

GOLFERSWhile parents relax nearby on a tree-shaded bench or picnic table, the kids can knock a ball around the turf, guided by adult staff.

It will take most youngsters a few minutes to complete the course and while there aren’t prizes to win, the youngsters seem to love it and the whole deal is free of charge.

Hot Shot

Local businesses are courting customers in the Horticulture Building, many giving free samples to passers-by. HOT SAUCE STANDCulinary exhibitors are are back to their sales and promotion at the New York State Fair after the weirdness of 2021 slowed traffic for many vendors.

Father-daughter team Mike and Marissa Sharlow, owners of Syracha’cuse of Baldwinsville are back in the Horticulture Building, giving tastes and selling their spicy condiments, many of which represent partnerships with other local businesses. SAMPLINGIn addition to 14 hot sauces, the company bottles hot mustard, barbecue sauce, wing sauce and spice rubs.

Early returns for the Sharlows and neighboring vendors were strong as traffic in the Hort was moderately brisk right from the opening bell. Shoppers and curious tasters can investigate a wide variety of state and local products including snacks, mixes, sweet treats and beer and wine clustered in the building. It’s a good place to buy in order to stock their kitchen cabinets or buy gifts for loved ones.

On The Trail, Day 4–The Mane Event

So far, there hasn’t been an official horse day at the New York State Fair, but the graceful, four-legged beauties are ever-present as participants in the International Horse Show with various events scheduled daily in the Coliseum. They no doubt rival cows as fans favorites when it comes to livestock.

RIDING WHITE 19Although hundreds of horses make Fair appearances, it can be difficult to get a close-up visit with horses on the grounds. Like many equine fans, State Fair Hound always tries to get into the main horse barn, but it’s usually closed to the general public, we’re told due to liability concerns.

One effective workaround on this restriction is to make a trip to the 4-H stables and show rings at the western end of the grounds. There seems to be a less restricted, more visitor-friendly vibe there, so horse fans can get some good photos and an occasional pat on the neck as a reward for making the trek.

The youthful riders bring great enthusiasm and commitment to their competition, so the 4-H area is an all-around positive experience. AT CORRALVisitors can view events from ringside bleachers or stroll the grounds and stables to get their horse-viewing fix. Mini horses are irresistibly adorable, their appearance schedule listed on the Fair’s livestock exhibition page.

The covered exercise ring next to the Coliseum and the corral just west of the horse barn also provide close-up views  as the horses are led in from nearby stalls, allowing the equine paparazzi some access. CORNERING

Arriving early on any day of the Fair will offer opportunities to observe ranchers and handlers walking their steeds around the grounds, bathing them at one of the specially-designed pads or exercising them in the cool of the morning.

New this year, horse enthusiasts will have a chance to learn about the lives and needs of horses at the  World of Horses exhibit presented in cooperation with SaddleUpNY. World of Horses will provide training and education on everything from how to keep a horse as a pet, to the knowledge needed for competitions, to what it looks like for horses to engage in police work as well as next career options for retired race horses.  Additionally, the exhibit features information on how to get involved with horses including options for college degrees, career fields, and riding programs. ENTERING

World of Horses takes place in the barn along Sioux Avenue near Gate 4 from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. daily, and from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Labor Day with clinics, demonstrations and meet the horse sessions scheduled regularly.

The International Horse Show includes many thrilling events, so be sure to check the Fair schedule and pull up a bleacher seat in the Coliseum for one or two.

On The Trail, Day 3–Taking the Pledge

Friday at the New York State Fair will be a day to recognize new Americans as about 100 people become citizens at an 11 a.m. ceremony in the Daniella’s restaurant in the Art and Home Center.

What would you do if you were hosting a new American or anyone from outside New York in late August or on Labor Day weekend? DANCERS GATHER 19Taking your visiting friend to the New York State Fair would be an obvious way to provide some first-rate entertainment but, presuming your had only one day, what would you do?

In other words, what are the most impressive, most characteristic, most entertaining exhibits and activities of the Fair?

What best exemplifies the New York State Fair?

Every fair in the country has rides and games of skill, don’t they? The smooth blacktop of the Fairgrounds is the staging area for a massive midway provided by Wade Shows. If rides are a passion, you could go there, but with one day, and presumably limited money and energy to expend, there are better ways to capture the spirit of the oldest state fair in the nation.

You could enter gate four and head straight for the Iroquois Village. The Six Nations citizens are true ambassadors of our home state.IV SHOPPING 19 Other states may have Native American exhibits, but they probably don’t have the proud People of the Longhouse hosting the consummate Empire State experience.

From there, if you have an interest in farm animals, there is a row of barns nearby where you can visit livestock of many species and breeds, from cows to chickens, raised in New York. HORSE WALK 18If your interest in animals is low, you will surely encounter some in your travels as they’re always nearby on the Fairgrounds.

At some point, you have to hop a tram for a free tour of the Fair perimeter and a view of how enormous the Fair really is. Stop number two let’s you off at the Pan African Village, another characteristic New York locality that pays tribute to our diverse culture.

You will then find yourself near the main buildings, the iconic landmarks that provide the architectural framework of the Fair. EAVES 15Although you may decline to visit all of them, standing on the Chevy Court lawn, you will be surrounded by sights that, like the Statue of Liberty, can be seen only in New York. Make no mistake, the solid foundation of our town square is classic New York.

To get a real taste of New York, figuratively and literally, you have to peruse the indigenous products in the Horticulture Building. Our homegrown apples, maple syrup, beer, flowers, wine and honey form our agricultural identity.

Speaking of buildings, you have to step inside the Exposition Center to marvel at the cavernous multi-use building that for many promoters and exhibitors has put Syracuse on the map with off-season events. Upon exiting Expo, you’ll be a short stroll from the agriculture museum, a loving look at how farming has evolved in New York and nationwide. BASILIO 15

When it’s time to eat, treat your friend to the taste of our Fair. Try a local restaurant–Twin Trees, King David, Bosco’s or Las Delicias, for instance–or head to a longtime Fair favorite food stand like Basilio, P-Z-O’s or Butcher Boys.

From Restaurant Row, you could duck into the Coliseum, known at times to host hockey, boxing and basketball, but during the Fair, host to the International Horse Show. PRIDEThat’s not just a name, there really are equestrians and breeds from all over, so it’s a surefire hit with horse lovers.

Cap off your evening with a free concert at Chevrolet court or the Experience stage or sit down with a Fair meal at one of many sites where local musicians entertain. That’s a full day and an unforgettable New York State Fair adventure.

In addition to New Americans, Friday will also be Pride Day at the Fair with events to celebrate diversity and inclusion beginning with a 9:30 a.m. flag raising at the main gate. There’s also a 6 p.m. parade down Broadway.

Premier Event

Our first look at the 2022 edition of the New York State Fair was very different from last year’s event and that’s great news. CLOSED WOOLGone are the omissions and restrictions imposed in 2021 as health precautions and nobody misses them. That was following the nightmare of 2020, when the Fair was cancelled. So this year we’re back to our more traditional Fair which we haven’t seen since 2019 and it’s a wonderful feeling.

Day one dawned brightly and it was a lovely day to enjoy the Fair. The area around Chevrolet Court got bustling early, sunlight glistening across the reflecting pool as visitors strolled past the State Parks exhibits or relaxed on a bench at the pond edge. POND MORNING

Fans had yet to invade Chevy Court to grab seats for the afternoon concert by Steven Page or the evening show featuring Jimmie Allen. The neat rows of metal benches were surrounded by lush green lawn. The pathetic lineup of concerts this year will likely mean less demand for those benches.

Many vendors and exhibitors were scrambling to finalize their set-up in the first few hours after the gates opened. Two very rainy days prior to opening no doubt delayed preparations.

Inside the Center of Progress, artists were still in the early stages of carving the sand sculpture, so the theme had yet to be revealed.

SAND DAY ONEThe grounds looked sparkling clean and staff was welcoming.

One low point is that many prices seem to be higher than in previous years–the Fair is affected no less than the rest of the world, though maple ice cream is still six dollars and still delicious.

It’s obvious that increased picnic areas continue to be a priority and there are many tables, especially since the Central Park area isn’t hosting shows this year.

The three days leading up to the first weekend aren’t usually too crowded, so with mostly good weather being forecast, Thursday and Friday should be good days to visit.

On The Trail, Day 2–Barn Buddies

Agriculture Career Day on Thursday will promote the pursuit of farming careers to young people at the New York State Fair. At the same time, everyone touring the grounds is likely to appreciate the many livestock meet-and-greets more than usual this year after several species were no-shows last Fair, while others made limited appearances.

Al of the traditional animals will be in their stalls and it will be great to see the return of sheep to a temporary shelter west of the Expo center. The conspicuous absence of the curly-headed ones was another casualty of the scaled-down 2021 Fair.

The short-sided enclosures used for sheep make them accessible to cautious petting and they are reputed to be gentle and friendly. COVERED SHEEPThe accommodations in their tent near the FFA Building may be different from their now-demolished barn, but it would seem that a common area will be used for judging in various categories and they usually supply bleachers for spectators, so stop by.

A cacophony of clucks, crows, quacks and squawks make the poultry barn the noisiest building at the New York State Fair. DUCK PONDMost chickens, turkeys and pigeons are caged, but a small pond right in the center of the floor provides a lighthearted look a some aquatic fowl.

BUNNY CLIPPING 18There’s also the quieter side, where the rabbits and cavies–also known as guinea pigs–sit huddled in their cages. The diminutive critters don’t seem to be having a great time, stuck in small cages in a strange environment, but people enjoy them anyway. The furry ones come in amazing variety of colors and shapes to fascinate visitors and delight the kids.

Sometimes they’re plucked from their confinement for a little maintenance or veterinary care, allowing those touring the barn to become spectators to the process. Stop by for a visit, but be careful about petting–they can bite.

CAVY 18Goats are also back on the bill after an abbreviated appearance over the final weekend last year. They’re curious and visible, stretching to peek above their stall fencing. GOAT STRETCHPhotographers will find the back end of the barn, nearest the Expo Center, better for shooting with brighter lighting, less intrusive enclosures and multi-goat areas offering good opportunities for getting nice pictures.

The goat milking parlor, close to the western entrance is often active with young handlers hooking up the animals to milking machinery.

After the llamas’ depart the Fair on Saturday, the pens in the eastern half of the barn the currently share with goats will be utilized to accommodate pigs.  PIG FAMILY 19

That’s a big change for visitors as the woolly, mountain-dwelling llamas are popular for their exotic appearance and haughty image. But the hogs are not to be outdone, especially considering the squeal appeal of litters of piglets that always draws a crowd.

The little guys are adorable, whether scurrying around the pens, playing, snoozing or nursing. There always seems to be a crowd watching with delight. They’re particularly popular with kids, who can peer between the bars to get an eye-level, close-up look at the cute, chubby babies. Pigs will be around for the rest of the Fair, starting Sunday.

It’s always been the unspoken paradox at the New York State Fair–families delight in touring livestock barns where they love to get close to cattle, goats, sheep, chickens and all of the other farm-raised animals brought in every year by New York farmers. FACE RUB 16Everyone loves seeing all of the fascinating and often lovable critters.

Minutes later, those same patrons belly up to the counter of a food stand to order up meals featuring meat from some of the same breeds of animals they just encountered alive in barn stalls. They probably don’t think about the process by which the animals go from cute and adorable to juicy and delicious.

But they should think about it because ultimately consumer demand determines how farm animals are raised and treated.

The day will also be recognized more generally as Youth Day with young folks age 18-and-under admitted free.

On The Trail, Day 1–Curtain Up

Wednesday is Opening Day of the 2022 New York State Fair. That annual first, fresh look at the clean, bright Fairgrounds is always exhilarating. You could call this a rebound year as it’s back to normal in many ways after last year when things were, well, not normal.

The Fair continues its infuriating policy of accepting no cash for parking or gate admission, so plan ahead. CMON INThe brown and orange lots have EZ Pass lanes. Logically, you would think that handing the attendant a five-dollar bill would be fine, but for some ridiculous reason, they won’t accept it.

There is a positive change though. The gates will open each morning at 9 a.m., a definite improvement over last year’s Cuomo-inspired 11 a.m. start time that left people waiting outside for hours. ROOSTER

Visitors will be able to enter in time to hear roosters greet the morning with crowing and to enjoy breakfast at one of several stands that serve such favorites as eggs and doughnuts.

Major buildings still don’t open until 10 a.m., but you may be able to gain early entry to some of the livestock barns. It’s also fascinating to watch midway ride operators and other exhibitors prepare for a wave of customers on the grounds.

Beat the traffic and the heat by passing through the gate as early as 9 a.m.

Traditionally, the first day of the Fair is also Governor’s Day. This is Kathy Hochul’s second Fair in office after her assent two weeks prior to opening day last year. She may hear questions about the mysterious departure of State Fair Director Troy Waffner, something that she has not fully explained.

RIDE KIDSCustomers will find it easier to breathe clean air at the 2022 New York State Fair as smoking will be severely restricted throughout the grounds.

While smoking is already prohibited under state law inside Fairgrounds buildings and by Fair policy at the Chevy Court and Chevy Park concert venues, starting this year smokers will be limited to lighting up in various designated outdoor smoking areas, which are shown on visitor maps.

The location of the astonishing sand sculpture has changed–yes, again–back to the Center of Progress. BUILDERS

On opening day the sculpture is usually still under construction, so if you enjoy watching the artists work, this is a good day to visit.

Llamas, the fascinating South American mammals, return for the start of the Fair. They take up temporary residence in the swine and goat building, beginning opening day.

6 LLAMASThey’ll be herded out Saturday afternoon, so stop in early. They’re stunning creatures, especially up close.

Don’t miss wild and hilarious llama costume contest scheduled for Friday at 7:30 p.m.

While visitors to the New York State Fair have their traditional favorite exhibits and events, every year the itinerary of special performers and entertainers staging shows around the grounds varies. Musical acts, stunt performers, talented animals and rib-tickling comedy provide a wide variety of free-of-charge shows sprinkled liberally throughout the day.5 IN AIR

There are fewer acts this year than usual, but look for them in Central Park–the grassy area between the midway and the barns–or further west in the Family Fun Zone–the lawn between the Youth Building and the New York Experience pond.

Bleacher space for the more popular shows can fill up fast, so grab a portable snack, arrive early and take a break as you await showtime.

The marquee attraction this year will be the return of wet and wild performances by Sea Lion Splash in the Family Fun Zone. The chubby, mustached mammals have been absent from the Fair for several years and their encore will draw large crowds three times every weekday, four on weekends.

BARK BROTHERS Make sure your camera is charged and ready as photos of the sideshows document some of your best Fair memories.

Several food stands along Broadway and Restaurant Row present bands and solo acts that are often surprisingly talented, adding an element of night club atmosphere to your Fair dinner. RR DUO

Check the schedule and stay alert for appearances by such terrific wandering entertainers as Bandoloni and Hilby who have both become Fair regulars.

One Day to Go!

Last chance to get advance tickets. The Great New York State Fair opens Wednesday--one day earlier than the traditional opening day. Don't miss it!

The Great New York State Fair begins Wednesday at the new opening time of 9 a.m. It’s back to the Fair we have missed for the past two years–all of the buildings open, all of the animals on hand, great Fair food and thrilling entertainment. Don’t miss it!

Bumper Cars

If you’re planning a trip to the New York State Fair on Thursday, early arrival is recommended as there will be a concert at 7:30 that evening at the Amphitheater, complicating the traffic and parking challenges. HORNS

It’s bad planning by amp organizers, but they do it every year, at least a couple of times.

In addition to Thursday, concerts are scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 27–a particularly stupid idea–and for Sep. 1, so plan ahead to avoid waiting in long lines of cars entering the lots.

We’ve heard that folks going a concert  won’t get free Fair admission this year, but it’s only three bucks, so stop complaining.

Everything Old is New Again

The countdown to the opening of the 2022 New York State Fair is down to the last few days and the headline story is the return of Sea Lion Splash. Everyone–with the possible exception of the seals themselves–enjoys the fish-catching, fast-swimming, ball-bouncing antics. BARKING SEA LIONS 15The show starring those whiskered aquatic mammals is one of just a handful of new features this year as the big news is that the traditional Fair is back after two painful, pandemic-affected years.

“The new features that we have this year are the old features that we have this year,” Interim Director Sean Hennessey told State Fair hound. “What’s new is old. We have a full Fair this year. That’s what’s new about the Fair this year.”

So it’s back to all of the buildings fully open and operational, all of the livestock in the barns and some popular food vendors returning after taking 2021 off. The World of Horses stable and scientific exhibits in the Center of Progress and the Science and Industry Building debut. Eco-Magician Steve Trash performs for the first time in the Empire Theater. MIKE WITH HAMMER

Beyond that, new features will have to wait for next year, when a sparkling new sheep and wool center will be one of several permanent structures to open.

“There’s a refocusing on agriculture,” Hennessey said. “We’re going to be doing groundbreaking on three different facilities sometime during the Fair. There’s going to be a brand new, state-of-the-art, 365-day greenhouse that we’re going to be constructing here on the Fairgrounds. We’re going to be looking at alternative energy packages for that project.”

Mighty Mike and the Strolling Piano return for the second year, joining such longtime luminaries as Hilby, Bandoloni, the Hawk Creek Birds of Prey and Circus Hollywood to put a shine on this year’s Fair.

The make-or-break element this year is really how the public reacts to the grand reopening. Fair customers coming out in big numbers to find the Fair they love waiting for them inside the gates will be cause to celebrate.
