Latino Village Weekend at the Fair starts Friday

Lively music, spicy cuisine and colorful arts will highlight Latin Weekend at the New York State Fair.

LATINO SIGN 18It’s a recent addition to the Fair itinerary that has caught on, taking place in the New York Experience area. Free entertainment will play from the stage while fans can stroll the grassy pasture in search of exotic foods and unusual gifts.

Dune Bugout

The immensely popular New York State Fair sand sculpture has returned to the Center of Progress after a one-year appearance in the Expo Center. SAND CARVER 19Day one visitors found Team Sandstastic busily carving images with a Wizard of Oz theme from mounds of damp sand. As always, they will finish their work within a few days, leaving their masterpiece in place for the remainder of the Fair.

Last Fair the most-asked question had to be “Where’s the sand sculpture.”

It may be again this year, but the answer has changed.

Friday is Pride Day at the Fair

Did you know that the Great New York State Fair is the nation’s first fair to host an official pride day? PARADE BAND 17

It starts with a flag-raising ceremony in the morning, followed by several special afternoon performances in the Empire Theatre.

Pride Day celebrants will take part in a parade like this one, kicking off at 6 p.m.

Green Light–Go to The Fair

It’s opening day of the 2019 New York State Fair.

HORAN LIGHT 18Day one is a great day to crash the gates to find your traditional Fair favorites, plus a first look at what’s new for the 173rd edition of the nation’s oldest state fair.

Now on a Wednesday, opening day isn’t usually too crowded, while everything is fresh and bright. Enthusiasm runs high for vendors and exhibitors, so fans can enjoy a great day, knowing that there will be 12 more to follow.

Both major stages–venerable Chevrolet Court and the upstart Experience Stage–each loaded with free concerts–are bookends to a festival grounds filled with colorful thrills and delicious food.

The 2019 New York State Fair is open. Get there!

 

 

Thursday is Family Fishing Day at the Fair

Thursday, for instance, you can drop a line and maybe even catch a fish as the New York State Fair celebrates Family Fishing Day.

No, it won’t be a whopper like the one pictured here, but it’s a challenge the whole family can take on as part of the day at the Fair. If you can’t make it Thursday, Family Fishing Day will be repeated on Saturday

Mountain Climbers

If you want to see one of the most exotic livestock stars being raised in the Empire State, be sure to visit the goat and swine barn early in New York State Fair to enjoy the limited appearance of those amazing llamas. LLAMA PORTRAIT 18

Though these beautiful wool-bearers are native to the Andes Mountains of South America, New York farmers have found that they’re amazingly adaptable to local pastures.

The llamas’ visit features competitions and special events–one hilarious one on day 3 has the camel cousins parading around while wearing costumes, something you sure don’t see every day, so don’t forget your camera.

These wooly beauties will be at the Fair Aug. 22, 23 and 24 with the barn being closed on the 24th at 3 p.m. for their departure. You can check the Fair website for complete schedules.

One Day to Go

Day One is Governor’s Day

Opening Day is always a great time to visit the New York State Fair. GOV 18

You may even see Andy Cuomo, New York’s governor, while traversing the grounds as he usually shows up to cut a ribbon, make a speech and gobble a sausage sandwich.

Not everyone is a fan of the Gov–such is politics. But you have to recognize, he’s arranged for a lot of improvements to our beloved fair, so put aside differences and join the celebration, at least for today.
