State Fair Hound

An independent view of the New York State Fair

Month: September 2015 (Page 2 of 3)

A Dazzling Dozen

Following every great football game comes the inevitable analysis. Likewise, with the New York State Fair, the day after brings review, at least here at State Fair Hound. UPSIDE DOWN RIDERS 15

In considering the respectable attendance total of 908,147, it’s impressive that the Fair overcame several big handicaps to get to that number. First, having fewer Grandstand shows meant that concert attendance didn’t boost gate totals as it has in some years past. Then there was competition from the amphitheater on Sep. 3, which, despite denial from some leaders, didn’t help. That’s not surprising, but it is something that needs to be ironed out before next year.

Then, after starting 2015 with three lovely late-summer days, each with higher attendance than last year, hot weather played a major role in discouraging people from going, especially those who were on the fence to begin with. KID AT MISTER 15They need some of those undecideds, but likely got very few. Not only was the brutal heat rare for that late in the summer, it just kept coming, actually peaking on Labor Day.

Late cancellation of two highly-anticipated Chevy Court acts could have been disastrous, but Waffner and company pulled off a nearly miraculous recovery, replacing Meghan Trainor, who cancelled three weeks before her show and Snoop Dog, who strayed on the eve of his performance, with two acts, Jason Derulo and Nas, respectively, both of whom drew very well. If they hadn’t been able to book popular acts on those two days, we’d be seeing attendance below the 900,000 threshold.

No need to make excuses for attendance totals that were lower than 2014. Directors with whom the Hound has discussed that issue over the past three decades are united in the belief that their job is to put together the best Fair they can and to concentrate on pleasing those who attend.

MR. PEANUTS 15The Hound would add that it’s important to avoid major incidents, such as safety problems, legal issues or significant inconvenience. As with last year, the Fair gets high grades here.

What more could they do to draw fans? Two days with $3 admission and one with $1 dollar sure make it affordable. A welcoming atmosphere highlighted by a spirit of inclusion and special events to recognize large constituencies projects a positive image. From start to finish, there was great food and great fun.

Before departing the grounds on Labor Day, the Hound took in one last view of the grounds and realized all over again what a miracle it is. The Fair is comprised of a 375-acre facility that hosted over 900,000 people for 12 days with 600 vendors, thousands of animals and 69 midway rides. Millions of details have to come together to get to opening day, not to mention Labor Day.

There’s much to review, analyze and plan and only 50 weeks in which to do it. State Fair Hound won’t be wasting any time before digging in to sniff out every story and every angle. Come along.

The Party’s Over

WADE GOOD-BYE 15As the sun set on Labor Day, New York State Fair 2105 faded out. After one last Chevy Court crowd in what’s being called the court’s biggest year ever, fireworks pieced the humid air above the Fairgrounds and fans reluctantly surged toward the exits.

The double-dose of disappointment that comes with the closing of the Fair really hurts. With the dismantling of the rides, closing of the buildings and shuttering of the food stands comes the end of school vacation and the holiday weekend. BUNGEE 15This year there is some compensation in expected relief from the torrid temperatures that dogged fairgoers for the past week.

For exhausted workers, Fair employees and even some of the animals, there may be time for overdue rest before assessment of this year’s success and planning for next year begins. TIRED KANGAROO 15Likewise, your State Fair Hound will spend the next week or two looking back, reflecting, critiquing, remembering, sharpening the focus on this go-round before forging ahead with ideas and projections for the next New York State Fair. The Hound invites you to join our journey to Aug. 25, 2016. At State Fair Hound it’s always Fair season.

Lighting Up the Night

After-dark hours have been especially popular with Fair patrons this year, owing as much to the steamy days as to scheduled concerts and special events. While such major acts as Melissa Etheridge, Nas, the Jacksons, Jason Derulo and the Steve Miller Band shined under Chevy Court’s spotlight, smaller stages from the Pan African Village to the Regional Artists Stage have also kept the music hot as the temperatures cooled. REGIONAL STAGE NIGHT 15

Meanwhile the wine village, the Restaurant Row Beer Garden and, of course, the midway made nighttime the right time for many to party down, New York style. Food stands tend to go with the flow, keeping the grills and fryers hot as long as there are customers to feed, giving fairgoers another reason to prolong their visits. BEER TENT NIGHT 15

Cheers to Fair management for extending last call for alcohol a little and to Mother Nature for rain-free evenings, several with a full moon to contrast the neon glow.

Last Call

Monday is your last chance to celebrate the New York State Fair this year. If you haven’t gone, get out there. If you’ve been there, you’ve seen how tremendous it is, so go again. PRIZE VEGGIES 15

Yeah, it’s going to be hot. But take your time, get some indoor time, rest frequently, drink plenty and you’ll still have a great time. Most buildings are air- conditioned, so this is the time to see the sand sculpture, to quaff some milk, to learn about maple production, to view some great artwork, to get answers to your health questions, to enjoy model trains and to review State Fair History. COWS NOSE-TO-NOSE 15

Barns are cooled, the wine court is shady, the State Parks exhibits are tree lined, there are spots to eat under umbrellas and there’s plenty of fun after dark, including a dazzling midway and a climactic fireworks show.

Don’t forget, admission is just $1 at the gate and rides are also a buck each. That’s an unbelievable value on the best entertainment package of the year. SAUSAGE STAND 15

If you don’t go, you’ll regret. The food is just as great as always and there really is something for everyone.

State Fair Hound reviews it all beginning Tuesday.

Sky High Guy

During the 2015 New York State Fair, your State Fair Hound has greatly increased the site’s photo file, many new images having been shot by crack Hound photojournalist, Nick LoPresti. COASTER FROM OT 15Saturday Nick, defying all risk, took some new pics from the Observation Tower ride, new to the Wade Shows midway this year (Tower of Power, Aug. 8, 2015).

CONE STAND 15The photos shot from the 100-foot-tall ride offer a proverbial birds-eye view of nearby rides, the infield and buildings near and far.

RIDE CLOSE-UP 15The Hound appreciates the courtesy of Wade Shows staff in getting Nick airborne early for these panoramic shots.

Baby Faces

As popular as animals are at the New York State Fair, baby animals hold a special fascination. WOLF PUPS 1 15

Rising Tide

Fair patrons entering the Grange Building to visit the State Fair history exhibit are finding more history than they expected. Just inside the door, Oswego artist Don Gillespie is at work on an ambitious project with a storied past of its own. It’s a re-creation of dramatic work by Charles Henry Grant (1866-1928) entitled “At the Mercy of Neptune” that Gillespie is painting in its original nine-foot-by-five-foot size. PAINTER GESTURING 15

The original painting, first displayed in 1896 in the Oswego gallery of Gillespies’ great-grandfather, W.R.Shayes, was damaged in a fire, then restored before being exhibited at the 1897 New York State Fair. Gillespie, is planning to complete the project during the Fair or shortly thereafter, pointing for an unveiling on Sep. 25 at the Oswego Art Association gallery. It will subsequently be donated to the Maritime Museum in Oswego. PAINT SUPPLIES 15

Gillespie, a former concept artist for the space program, is selling tee-shirts and collecting donations to finance the project while painting and talking to fairgoers, especially enjoying the insightful questions he gets from kids. PAINTER CLOSE-UP 15

Boom or Bus

The Thursday New York State Fair attendance of 66,447 seems to bear out State Fair Hound’s prediction that a well-attended concert at the new amphitheater would do little to benefit business down the hill at the Fair. Like most fans, the Hound chose between these two events (guess which one) rather than negotiate the shuttle system or hike the Orange Lot Trail, overlooking this lovely landscape, to do both.POLLUTION FROM RAMP 15

Syracuse.com entertainment reporter Chris Baker confused us a bit in writing that while Miranda Lambert’s maiden show “didn’t fill the 17,500-person venue, it came pretty close,” then saying in the next sentence that there was “lots of room to spare on the lawn.”

While the Hound doesn’t know exactly what that means, absent actual attendance figures, let’s say there were 12,000 to 15,000 at the new joint. In years past, a concert that drew that many to the Grandstand would boost gate counts and produce some impressive numbers, but 66,447 isn’t all that impressive. Also, don’t forget that Jason Derulo had a massive crowd estimated at 24,800 at Chevy Court and, at the same time, Patti LaBelle, playing the final Grandstand show, had about 7000 seats filled, according to Acting Director Troy Waffner.

MAIN GATE 15No doubt, the hot, humid weather convinced some potential fairgoers to postpone their visit, but the dueling-venues conflict played a big part in the modest turnstile totals. Unless the Fair can figure out a way to get concert fans down to the grounds, we’ll see this become a pattern. Of course, this is an issue created by Cuomo and his BFF, Joanie Mahoney.

So what do you say, Gov? Ready to pony up for a monorail? One thing we know he won’t do is admit that the off-site stage wasn’t such a great idea for our New York State Fair because he sure didn’t listen to those who tried to make that point prior to construction.

Diet Hard

The Post-Standard recently quoted a local dietician they interviewed as advising State Fair visitors not to skip meals before heading out for a day on the grounds. In the interest of equal time, State Fair Hound offers this advice: Go hungry and eat a lot. SF2015-KCDAY5 009

A good friend of The Hound once confessed to going to the Fair with her husband, but eating nothing, fearing that health and sanitary standards were lacking. Not true. Keep in mind that the vendors at the Fair are held to the same standards that restaurants are, including frequent inspections. These folks are professionals, often owners of year-round eateries or traveling diners that do this most of the year at locations all over the country. RESTAURANT ROW 15

When it comes to nutrition, not only can you find plenty to eat that’s healthy, if you don’t, no big deal. You’re allowed to splurge as part of the best festival of the year, so go for it. Unless you have serious medical issue, chow down and indulge yourself at the Fair. You can go back to minding your diet after Labor Day. THUMBS UP 15
